It’s an easy target, I know but people have sent me so many good anti IE6 sites lately that I felt compeled to compile a list.
- Internet Explorer Blows Hard – this guy in addition to having a nice rant, gives some examples of how to use IE conditional statements to display a message to users who prefer IE. The message, of course, encourages those users to download Firefox. Note: a similar message “Browse Happy” with a link to Firefox appears to IE users trying to access the WordPress admin.
- Norway leads the “upgrade from IE6” charge and here.
- Upgrade IE6 notification javascript at Google Code.
- This guy brings up an interesting point – that IE6’s ability to stick around is because of developers like me (and probably you) – “If you spend hours hacking your site to work perfectly in IE6, you’re taking away any incentive from slow adopters to drop their old browser. All the hacks and legacy support that we implement on our sites is the reason IE6 still has a large market share.” – view Drop IE6
- This blog, Give IE6 users the message to upgrade or change gives a nice example of how you can re-create the Norwegian code mentioned above.
- My personal favorite – Save IE6 – sign the petition, it’s fun.
- Released in 2001 and you can still download it…amazing. Want a copy, it can be yours right here.
It is amazing to me that someone would choose to use a browser that is over 7 years old when newer, faster, more secure alternatives are available all over the internet for free. But, this thread I had with friends on Facebook yesterday does bring up an alternative point of view.
Hank Pantier good news re my earlier tweet (Europe) Firefox more popular than IE http://bitly.com/ydiXu -Please just make IE 6 go away, force upgrade M$!
guess who has to design his WHOLE INTRANET to work with IE6?guess who should tell people that it was made in 2001. 8 years ago. Then ask them…never mind, if they’re still running ie6 they’re probably hopeless.guess you could spin it as a feature – ie6 compatible with RETRO styling.i second the nomination!Good idea, Hank. It’s not just an intranet, it’s a Classic Intranet.like a time machine. “Browse like you did when you were 7 years younger.” IE6, youthful browsing.Good stuff Hank!
