Color (two toned) “Black & White” images

eThis morning I got stuck trying to do something fairly simple on a design.  I wanted to create a two toned image (think black and white but a color instead of black).  I have done this before, but it’s always been kind of hacked together and i really wanted the color to match some elements I had already worked on.  Luckily I have met some very talented people working in this industry for years – a simple email to Andrew of Serious Retouching and Information Contraband fame, and it was done.

Here’s what he said

Try this: make your pic b&w. Then change your file’s color mode back to RGB. Duplicate the BG layer. Then make a layer under the duplicate and fill it with the brown you want. Set the top (BG duplicate) layer to Screen or Linear Dodge mode.

Another way to do this:

Open your pic.  Command-click on the thumbnail for the RGB composite channel in the Channels Pallete. Hit Command-i. At the bottom of the Layers Pallete, click on the New Adjustment Layer icon and choose Solid Color. Pick the brown you want and click OK. Now everything darker than 50% gray should be brown.

Thanks for your help, Andrew, it worked out brilliantly see the results:
